I’m 33 years old, divorced, and not sure I want kids. Right now, I find myself happy, independent, and in love with a man who doesn’t want kids. I have a little time to figure it out, but I feel it’s important to start thinking about it.
Having a similar dilemma? Comment here with your thoughts on whether or not to procreate. Giving myself advice can only go so far.
Here’s my ongoing Pro and Con list (so far) about whether or not to have kids:
PRO
- To create a product of love with a man I love
- Introduce she/he to cool music and brag about the great artists I knew when I was young
- Have someone actually interested in statements that begin with “when I was young…”
- Go school shopping for new clothes and supplies
- Teach her/him to read
- Help him/her write a personal essay for college
- Eat dinner together and talk about our day
- Impart and share great taste in arts and culture
CON
- There are 7 billion humans on earth who are living longer and consuming more resources (read more from Forbes reporter Erica Gies in the article “Why I’m Not Having Kids — And You Shouldn’t Either.” Please note: she looks about 20 years old)
- Fear of screwing the poor kid up (and we know I will; it’s inevitable)
- Going to kid-friendly restaurants
- The cost of raising one
- Being responsible for everything from feeding it to wiping its ass to cleaning it (I can barely do this for myself)
- Watching her/him struggle with heartbreak, depression, and loss
- Worrying all the time about everything related to the kid and nothing related to me
- All that kid crap cluttering your personal space
To be continued…

the cultural dieferfnces between the east and west, and questioned notions of smoking being a mainly adult activity. Adult smokers are the societal norm, so I wanted to isolate the viewer’s focus upon the issue of smoking itself. I felt that children smoking would have a surreal impact upon the viewer and compel them to truly see the acts of smoking rather than making assumptions about the person doing the act от авторката.
